Custom Gimbal with Through-Bore Slip Ring

The Challenge: A customer needed continuous two-axis rotation for a new instrument but also required clear, unobstructed access through the center to mount a stationary object. Standard rotary stages include an aperture, but running cables through a continuously rotating stage can cause cables to tangle. Zaber's standard gimbals include optional slip rings to provide unrestricted rotation with cables but this component occupies the rotary stage aperture. The Solution: Our Custom Engineering team designed a custom miniature gimbal that integrates a through-bore slip ring.

X-G-RST Gimbal with RST240 Azimuth Axis

This image shows a X-G-RST500 with an X-RST240B as the azimuth axis. This allows higher speeds and accelerations to be achieved. This setup can be changed to accommodate different size working envelopes. The devices are daisy-chained together through a slip ring, which allows daisy-chaining power and data to the X-RST120 without tangling wires as the stage rotates. An additional X-RST120 can be added in Lockstep to increase the capacity of the elevation axis.

Custom Two-Axis Rotary Gimbal

This gimbal system consists of an X-RSB for the lower axis with an X-RSW driving the upper axis. The devices are daisy-chained together through a slip ring, which allows daisy-chaining power and data to the X-RSW without tangling wires as the stage rotates. This setup can easily be customized to accommodate different size working envelopes or be mounted to work with an X-RST for higher accuracy systems.

Zaber Technologies Gimbal

This customized gimbal system consists of two RST rotary stages, an X-MCB2 external controller, and custom-sized brackets. This setup can be changed to accommodate different size working envelopes. Some additional options include rotary stages with built-in controllers, motor encoders, or direct encoders. It is also possible to connect device cables through a slip ring, which allows daisy-chaining power and data to the stages without tangling wires as the stage rotates.
