UBC Capstone Project

Published on Apr. 10, 2013

Application

The UBC Capstone team developed an ice cream scooping robot according to the requirements of their client. The primary objectives were to eliminate the repetitive physical strain experienced by employees when scooping hard ice cream and to attract younger customers to purchase ice cream from their client's store. Zaber's actuators were used to introduce independent motion in the three axes of the XYZ gantry frame. The integration of controllers and encoders within the actuators, in addition to the library of commands, provided the team with an easy-to-use platform when developing the system. The final design consisted of a freezer, an aluminum extrusion frame, an XYZ gantry with a quick release adaptor, a scooping mechanism (scoop and stack), and a custom controls interface using Zaber's C# Library.
