Power-Off Brake for Motorized Linear Stages in Vertical Applications
Last updated on Jul. 10, 2025
To protect payloads during unexpected power interruptions or stalls, Zaber offers a power-off brake integrated into several of its product families, including linear stages (LC40, LRT, LRU), rotary stages (RSB) and stepper motors (NMS). The brake releases on power up, allowing the stage to be operated like any other Zaber product, but will engage automatically in the event of a power interrupt, stall, displacement or driver fault, securing the payload from any unintended motion. This allows the use of high speed screw and belt stages in vertical applications without concerns of dropping the load.
The following product families are available with optional power-off brakes:
- X-LRT-EC Series: Screw-driven linear stage, up to 1200 N of maximum axial brake force, speeds up to 700 mm/s
- LRU-E Series: High load capacity, screw-driven linear stage, up to 2850 N of maximum axial brake force, speeds up to 400 mm/s
- LC40-KM01 Series: Extrusion compatible belt-driven linear stage, up to 70 N of maximum axial brake force, speeds up to 3000 mm/s
- X-RSB-E Series: High-speed belt-driven rotary stage, up to 7.5 Nm of brake torque, speeds up to 600rpm
- X-NMS23-E Series: NEMA23 stepper motor with integrated controller, up to 1.5 Nm for brake torque, speeds up to 3000rpm and 1.8Nm of torque
- NMS34-E Series: NEMA34 stepper motor, up to 2.0 Nm for brake torque, speeds up to 3000 rpm and 5.25 Nm of torque
The brake comes integrated into the stage and ready to go out of the box, working seamlessly with Zabers integrated and external controllers. The brake can also be controlled manually via our intuitive ASCII protocol or our Zaber Motion Library API, providing seamless integration with Zaber’s full range of motion control products.
