Precautions
Zaber's linear stages can produce enough force to cause personal injury. Be careful to not get body parts caught between the moving carriage and the end plates of the stage. Make sure that no loose clothing gets caught in the rotating lead screw.
Maintenance
Teflon-coated (black) lead screws are not designed to be greased. Normally no lubrication is required over the lifetime of the device. If a squeaking sound develops in the lead screw, Super Lube oil with PTFE (Product number #51004) can be applied. Apply a very thin bead over 80% of the contact surface of the lead screw and run the stage slowly from end to end. Wipe off any excess.
Lead Screw
The stage will move the following distance per revolution of the lead screw:
- LSTxxxA-M00: 1.5875 mm (0.0625")
- LSTxxxB-M00: 6.35 mm (1/4")
- LSTxxxD-M00: 25.4 mm (1.0")
Mounting a motor
The stage is designed to accept a motor with 1.5" (38.1 mm) alignment ring and a 1/4" (6.35 mm) shaft.
- Attach coupling to motor with far end of coupling 28.5 mm from motor. Use medium strength Loctite 243 (or equivalent) on set screws and tighten to 1.5 N-m. Make sure set screw contacts flat of motor shaft. Loosen the set screw that will later attach the lead screw and put Loctite 243 on it too and put it back in place.
- Rotate lead screw so the flat on the end is facing upwards.
- Insert motor into motor end plate with the coupling set screw facing upwards. Slide the coupling over the lead screw end.
- Tighten the motor screws to 3 N-m.
- Tighten the coupling to the lead screw to 1.5 N-m.
Hall effect sensor
- A Hall effect sensor is mounted in the stage for use as a home sensor. Click here for data sheet. Your controller should be configured so the stage stops immediately (no deceleration) when the home sensor is triggered. The stage motor should then move the carriage in the opposite direction until the sensor turns off, then continue for about 1mm more.
- Wire colour code:
- 3.6-24 Vdc input - red
- Home signal - yellow
- Ground - black
The Hall sensor has an open-collector output. The default output is high impedance when the Hall sensor is not active. When the sensor detects a magnet, the Hall sensor pulls the output low to ground.
If you are not using the T-MCA controller, ensure that your controller has a pull-up resistor on the output line of the Hall sensor as shown in the diagram. The bypass capacitor is optional, but may help to eliminate false triggering in noisy environments. The typical value for the pull-up resistor (RLOAD) is 10k and for the bypass capacitor is 0.1uF to 1uF. The larger the capacitance, the better the noise filtering but the slower the response time.
